Standing up tall and sitting up straight are the positions that allow for the least amount of stress on your spine.  Unfortunately, modern lifestyle has made it compulsory for many people to spend most of their time staring at a computer screen while sitting on a chair with a forward-tilted head or text on a smartphone with the chin touching the chest. Extensive use of computers and smartphones has proven extremely detrimental to the backbone of the users.

New research has found that the amount of weight on the spine dramatically increases as one leans his/her head forward. Cervical or neck area of the spine is extremely vulnerable to early wear, tear and degeneration because of poor posture.  Research has found that forward tilted head while using a tablet, texting on a smartphone and leaning towards the computer screens costs us more than 700 hours per year of excess stress on our cervical spine.  A 15 degrees of tilt forward increases the weight of our 10 to 12 pounds head all the way to 27 pounds.  At the angle of 45-degree, the weight of the head on neck reaches 49 pounds. And as one just drops his/her head forward at 60-degree, the head becomes as heavy as 60 pounds.

The posture we adopt as we stare at our phones and computers increases the stress on the neck and can cause excessive deterioration.   In order to avoid possible surgeries, most people opt for a visit to a chiropractor who provide non-surgical treatment for disorders of the spine and nervous system. This proper alignment enables the body to heal itself without surgery or medication.

We, first of all, should always try to maintain a proper body posture to avoid serious consequences.  It is a good idea to repeatedly change positions throughout the day – every 30 minutes, change your position for 30 seconds – and stretch the spine in the opposite direction to reverse the pressure. However, if you are paying for the poorly maintained posture, courtesy of smartphones and computers, a chiropractor in Mississauga is someone you may need to see.
